Confined Space Training Requirements

Introduction

Employers must provide training to all entrants so that they gain adequate knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to safely perform their duties in confined spaces.

Confined space training needs to be a hands-on-how-to session in a simulated confined space.

Entrant training or retraining should occur:

  • before the employee starts work;
  • before there is a change in assigned duties;
  • whenever there is a change in permit space operations that presents a hazard about which an employee has not previously been trained;
  • whenever the employer finds changes in the permit space entry procedures; or
  • when an entrant displays a lack of knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSAs).

After training is completed, the employer must keep a record of employee training and make it available for inspection by employees and their authorized representatives. Training records should include employee names, topics taught, dates of the training, and trainer certification that entrants have had an opportunity to practice entry procedures and gained adequate KSAs to perform their duties safely.
