William Kiarie:
Seeing Safety in a New Light

William Kiarie reflects on how OSHAcademy has transformed his understanding of workplace safety. He shares, "After taking OSHAcademy courses, I now understand why we do things the way we do." Kiarie, who works with machines, was always careful, but OSHAcademy helped him see safety in a new light.

Machine Guarding: Beyond Common Sense

For instance, while he always knew machine guarding was important, he now understands the critical role it plays in protection. In the past, other engineers would sometimes disconnect guards from gliders and circular cutters, but Kiarie has since become much more vigilant in ensuring proper safeguards are in place.

Injury Prevention and Lockout/Tagout Awareness

Through his training, Kiarie has also gained a deeper understanding of injury prevention, such as managing wounds and blood stains to prevent pathogenic contamination. He now views Lockout/Tagout procedures as essential, emphasizing the importance of securing keys and, in some cases, double-locking padlocks. He also recognizes the need to record the time and date when jobs are completed. Additionally, William now understands the distinction between hard hats for electrical and general work, whereas previously, only a standard hard hat was used.

OSHAcademy helped William develop stronger practices for injury prevention and equipment safety.

OSHAcademy has truly elevated Kiarie’s approach to safety, making him more mindful and knowledgeable in his daily tasks.

Kiarie’s story shows that knowledge isn’t just about knowing what to do—it’s about understanding why it matters—and through OSHAcademy, he has become a more vigilant, mindful safety professional.
