About IACET
IACET began as a task force in 1968 under the U.S. Department of Education, known as the Council on the Continuing Education Unit (CCEU). The goal was to create a standardized way to measure non-credit continuing education activities. In 1970, this task force introduced the Continuing Education Unit (CEU), which became a standard measure for educational programs, equivalent to ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education and training (CE/T) experience. This new unit aimed to make it easier for professionals to track their education and training across different fields and institutions.
As the task force grew, IACET was officially founded in 1990 to continue the work of promoting and maintaining high standards in continuing education. In 2006, IACET was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an official Standards Developer. This approval allowed IACET to create the ANSI/IACET Standard, a widely recognized framework for developing effective continuing education and training programs.
