Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs)

When there is a mismatch between the physical requirements of the job and the physical capacity of the worker, workplace musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) can result.

WMSDs affect the musculoskeletal system, which includes the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints. These disorders are caused or aggravated by workplace activities and can affect various parts of the body, including the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and hands.

Risk Factors

Repetitive exposure to the risk factors below for WMSDs increases a worker's risk of injury. Workers in many different industries and occupations can be exposed to these risk factors.

  • Repetitive motion: Repeated movements or activities, such as assembly line work or using a computer mouse, can strain the muscles and tendons, leading to WMSDs.
  • Awkward or sustained postures: Holding a posture for extended periods, such as bending or twisting, or working in awkward positions, can put excessive strain on the muscles and joints.
  • Forceful exertions: Lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy objects or using excessive force can lead to WMSDs.
  • Vibrations: Exposure to vibrations, such as from using power tools or driving heavy machinery, can lead to WMSDs.
  • Contact stress: Pressure from hard surfaces or objects, such as using a keyboard or leaning against a desk, can cause localized pain and discomfort.
  • Poor ergonomic design: Poor workstation design, including poorly adjusted chairs or desks, can cause muscle strain and other WMSDs.
  • Lack of breaks or recovery time: Working for long periods without adequate rest breaks or recovery time can lead to fatigue, increasing the risk of WMSDs.
  • Individual factors: Personal factors such as age, gender, and physical fitness can also contribute to the development of WMSDs.
