Pictogram Requirements

The HCS requires pictograms on shipped and workplace labels to alert users of the nature and severity of the chemical hazards to which they may be exposed.

The OSHA standard for pictograms requires specific symbols. Each pictogram must have a red square set on a point against a white background with a black symbol inside. The symbol must be big enough that it can be easily recognized by a worker.

The pictograms used by OSHA are the same as the GHS pictograms used internationally. The only difference is that OSHA does not require use of the "Environment" pictogram (see chart).
