Purpose of the Standard

The purpose of the HCS is to make sure that:

Information about the hazards of classified chemicals are transmitted using four strategies.
  1. the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classified, and
  2. information about the classified hazards is transmitted to employers and employees.

Classifying and communicating information about chemical hazards and the appropriate use of protective measures include the following:

  1. Developing and maintaining a written hazard communication program
  2. Labeling and other forms of warning
  3. Preparing and distributing SDSs to employees
  4. Developing and implementing information and training programs
