Foot Protection

Foot protection is essential for workers who may be exposed to hazardous substances, heavy objects, sharp materials, or electrical hazards. In hazardous waste operations and spill response activities, footwear must provide both chemical resistance and physical protection.

Safety Boots

  • Boots should be constructed of chemical-resistant material to protect from chemical exposure.
  • Boots should be constructed with some steel materials (e.g., toes, shanks, insoles) to help protect against compression, crushing, and punctures by sharp objects.
  • Boots should be constructed from nonconductive, spark-resistant materials or coatings to protect against electrical hazards and prevent ignition of gases or vapors.
  • Disposable shoes or boot covers slip over the shoe or boot. They protect boots from contamination and contact with chemicals.

Accessories

Knives

Knives allow a person in fully-encapsulating suite to cut a way out in the event of an emergency. They should be carried and used with caution to avoid puncturing the suit.

Flashlights and Lanterns

Flashlights and lanterns enhance visibility in buildings and enclosed spaces. They must be intrinsically safe or approved for the class and group of hazard (explosion-proof). Placing a flashlight in a plastic bag help prevent contamination.

Personal Dosimeters

Personal dosimeters measures exposure to ionizing radiation and certain chemicals. The dosimeter should be placed inside the fully-encapsulating suit to estimate actual body exposure.

Personal Locator Beacons

Locator beacons are operated by sound, radio, or light to enable emergency personnel to locate a victim.

Two-way Radios

Two-way radios allow field workers to communicate with personnel in the support zone.

Safety Belts, Harnesses, and Lifelines

Safety belts, harnesses, and lifelines allow personnel to work in elevated areas or enter confined spaces. They can be used to carry tools and equipment. They must be constructed of spark-free hardware and chemical-resistant materials.
