Hydrogen Gas

Flammable hydrogen gas is always present during battery recharging. If it builds up in an enclosed space, it can lead to a fire or explosion. This is especially dangerous when working with industrial lift trucks in warehouse or factory environments.

How NOT to Water Forklift Batteries

Hydrogen gas is potentially explosive if allowed to accumulate in a closed area. Below are requirements and recommended best practices to prevent injuries and incidents related to hydrogen gas during battery charging:

  • Post "No Smoking" Signs: Clearly mark the battery charging area with "No Smoking" signs. This warns workers not to smoke or use open flames near charging stations where hydrogen gas may be present.
  • Use Non-Sparking Tools: Always use non-sparking tools when working near battery charging stations. This reduces the risk of creating a spark that could ignite hydrogen gas.
  • Prevent Open Flames, Sparks, or Electrical Arcs: Keep welding, cutting torches, and other flame-producing tools away from the charging area. Even a small spark from an electrical tool or static electricity can cause an explosion if hydrogen gas has built up.
  • Provide Adequate Ventilation: Make sure the battery charging area has good airflow. This helps carry away hydrogen gas and prevents it from reaching dangerous concentrations. Use fans or mechanical ventilation systems if needed.
  • Open the Battery Cover During Charging: Leave the battery compartment open while charging. This allows hydrogen gas to escape more easily, especially in small or confined areas where gas can build up quickly.
