10-3. Personnel Required Qualification/Training.

General Responsibilities

  • Train welders and cutters in safe equipment operation, proper respirator use, and fire protection.
  • Refer to chapter 5 for respiratory protection details.
  • Consult chapter 9 for fire protection procedures.

Welder Designation

  • Designate welders in writing for their specific job functions.
  • Attach proof of qualification to the designation.

Structural Welding

  • Ensure personnel performing structural welding or inspections are trained and certified according to AWS standards.
  • Appropriate certifications include Certified Senior Welding Inspectors (CWSI), Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI), or equivalent inspector.

Hot Tap Operations

  • Only competent personnel may perform hot tap, welding, or cutting on active flammable gas or liquid transmission pipelines.
