182 Healthcare: Ethylene Oxide Safety

Chronic Exposures

Unlike acute exposure, chronic exposure occurs over an extended period. Chronic exposure to ethylene oxide has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Chronic exposure to EtO occurs over an extended period.

In humans, chronic exposure to EtO can lead to higher cancer incidences, adverse reproductive effects, and chromosomal damage. Repeated ingestion of EtO can lead to gastric irritation and liver injury.

The chronic effects of EtO exposure develop slowly over time, making them hard to recognize until the damage to the body has already been done.

Chronic exposure to EtO has also been associated with:

  • occurrence of cancer
  • reproductive effects
  • mutagenic changes
  • neurotoxicity
  • sensitization
  • pulmonary edema
